HATTIESBURG, Miss. --
The
University of West Alabama baseball
team blasted its way to an 11-6 win
over William Carey at Milton Wheeler
Field on Wednesday afternoon. UWA
hit four total runs on the day, led
by Simone’s two homers.
The Crusaders jumped
on the scoreboard in the second
inning, but UWA answered in the top
of the third with three runs, two
coming off a two-run homerun by
Kevin Deese that scored Rob
Dahlberg. Bryan Mason was the first
Tiger run of the inning, as he
scored on Dahlberg’s single up the
middle. WCU pulled within one run in
the bottom of the frame.
UWA added another
three spot in the fourth. Simone hit
a lead off homer to put the lead at
4-2. Jody Morgan became the second
run of the inning, scoring on a
Dallas Rogers double to left center.
Jeremy Finney capped off the inning
with a sacrifice fly to left field
that scored Mason.
Back-to-back solo
round trippers by Nick Wheeler and
Simone in the fifth inning increased
the lead to 8-2. WCU posted one on
the board in the bottom of the
inning, but the Tigers answered on a
Dahlberg single that scored Finney.
The Crusaders added on three more in
the sixth.
UWA added two
additional insurance runs in the
ninth.
Josh Varner (4-1)
picked up the win with two innings
of work. Starter Colter Millican
heaved three innings on the bump
with three strikeouts. Brian Burgess
logged his fifth save of the season
with two innings on the hill with
two strikeouts.
West Alabama returns
to the diamond on Saturday, March
14, as UWA opens Gulf South
Conference action against the
University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Action begins with a doubleheader on
Saturday, starting at 4:00 p.m. The
game will be broadcasted on WZNJ
106.5-FM with Jason Gardner bringing
you the action from Tartt Field.
