PENSACOLA,
Fla. – The 11th-ranked
University of West Alabama
baseball team secured its fourth
Gulf South Conference series win
on Sunday afternoon, as UWA
(25-10, 10-1) blanked West
Florida 6-0. The shutout was the
first of the season for the
Tigers and the first over the
Argonauts (26-17, 6-6) in the
series.
Kevin Deese led the Red and
White at the plate going 2-for-4
with two RBI and a run scored in
the win. Colter Millican (1-0)
notched his first victory of the
season with five innings on the
mound. In his fourth start of
the season, Millican allowed six
hits with four walks and two
strikeouts, while holding the
Argos scoreless.
The Tigers scored one run in
their first at-bat and posted a
pair of runs in the second and
third innings for the 5-0. Deese
doubled through the right side
to score Dallas Rogers and
Jeremy Finney for the runs in
the second inning. Douglas
Frazier extended the lead to 4-0
in the third inning as he scored
a Rogers single. Bryan Mason
became the second run of the
inning, scoring on a fielding
error by Argos second baseman
Kyle Brown.
UWA added an insurance run in
the fourth, as Deese scored on a
Frazier single to the UWF
shortstop Brandon Brewer.
J. B. Black and Brian Burgess
helped combine in the shutout
effort, pitching in relief.
Black relieved Millican with
three innings pitched, giving up
just two hits and recording two
strikeouts. Burgess closed the
door in the ninth inning,
allowing just one hit with a
strikeout.
West Alabama returns to action
on Wednesday, Apr. 8, as the
Tigers open a six-game homestand
against William Carey in
mid-week action. First pitch is
