LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The
20th-ranked
University of West Alabama
baseball team received a stellar
pitching performance from Mike
Schmitt, as UWA (21-8, 6-0)
downed Valdosta State 5-1 on
Saturday evening at Tartt Field.
The win snapped a four-game
losing streak to the Blazers.
Schmitt (7-2), a Cheyenne,
Wyo.-native, hurled 7 2/3
innings in the win. The senior
right-hander set down a
season-high 11 batters, while
scattering two hits and one run
in the outing. Colter Millican
and Brian Burgess each pitched
2/3 of an inning, allowing no
runs. The two hit affair was a
season low for the Red and White
pitching staff.
Rob
Dahlberg and Bryan Mason both
logged multiple hit efforts.
Dahlberg, a Gilbertown,
Ala.-native, went 3-for-4 at the
dish with two runs scored, while
Mason, a product of Madison
Heights, Mich., went 2-for-4 at
the plate with two runs scored.
Dallas Rogers picked up a
multiple-RBI outing with two
runs batted in on a 1-for-3
night.
VSU
tallied its only run of the
contest in its first at-bat. The
Tigers posted a two spot in the
home half of the second inning
on Rogers’ single to left center
that scored Mason and Jody
Morgan. UWA added a single run
in the fifth inning to take a
3-1 lead, when Dahlberg scored
on a fielder’s choice that
erased Nick Wheeler.
The
Tigers added insurance runs in
the seventh and eighth innings.
After a lead off double from
Dahlberg and moving to third on
a wild pitch, he crossed the
plate on a Nick Wheeler ground
out. Mason scored on a wild
pitch in UWA’s final plate
appearance after reaching base
via a double.
West
Alabama returns to the diamond
