UWA Baseball completes sweep of West Georgia

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The 20th-ranked University of West Alabama baseball team clinched the Gulf South Conference East Division Championship outright on Sunday afternoon, finishing off the three-game sweep of West Georgia in a 6-2 victory at Tartt Field.

The Senior Day sweep becomes the Tigers (38-14, 14-4 GSC) fifth of the season and first since taking all three from Henderson State earlier this season.

Leading 2-1 through five innings, UWA added its go ahead run in the sixth inning as Clark Humber, who led off the inning with a single and stole second, scored on a Rob Dahlberg single to left center for a 3-1 advantage.

The Wolves (25-25, 6-12 GSC) cut the lead back to one in the seventh on a Jordan Towns solo homerun to left field. That would be as close as UWG would get, as the Tigers plated three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Jeremy Dorrance, who was pinch running for Tres Avans, scored on a Clint Moody bunt single for the first run of the eighth. The Red and White’s final two runs came when Chris Gilbertsen reached on a fielder’s choice, which forced out Dahlberg, but scored Moody and Jake DeRoy on a throwing error by catcher, Dan Williams.

UWA placed its first run on the board in its first at bat, as Humber scored on a Todd Rea double to right center, but the Wolves tied the game in the top of third on a Alex Parker single to center field that score A. J. Renfrow.

The Tigers climbed back on top in the fifth as James Guilliams scored on a throwing error by Adam Matos.

Charles Kelley (3-1) received the win on the mound, throwing six innings, allowing one run on four hits, while fanning five and walking three. Brent Telano earned his fifth save of the season with 1 1/3 innings, striking out two. R.J. Miller also saw time in relief with 1 2/3 innings on the hill, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Jason Moore (4-2) went six innings for the Wolves in the loss, allowing three runs on the six hits with four strikeouts.

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, May 5, as the Tigers will face West Division #4 seed, Arkansas Tech, in the GSC Baseball Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. at the USA Baseball Stadium in Millington, Tenn. The game will be aired on WZNJ 106.5 and at athletics.uwa.edu.
