Tigers Sweep Montevallo; Rundles Gets 300th Win at UWA

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team completed the series sweep of Montevallo on Sunday afternoon with a 15-8 win at Kermit A. Johnson Field. The win also was the 300th at UWA for Tiger skipper Gary Rundles.

Leading 4-3 after four innings, UWA (20-8, 5-0 GSC) blasted seven runs on the board in the fifth inning to blow the contest open at 11-3. Kevin Deese led off the scoring with his second homerun of the game with a shot down the right field line. The leadoff homer was his fourth of the season. Deese’s first homer of the game put UWA up 3-1 in the third inning with a two-run round-tripper to right field that scored Rob Dahlberg.

After Nick Wheeler scored on a bases loaded walk to put the Red and White up 6-3, following Deese’s leadoff homer, Dallas Rogers doubled down the right field line to score Douglas Frazier and Brian Simone. Jeremy Finney capped the scoring in the frame, crossing the dish on a Dahlberg ground out.

After UM plated two runs in the bottom of the inning, the Tigers added three more on the board. Rogers singled to right field to score Frazier for the first run of the sixth and two batters later Dahlberg singled up the middle, scoring Finney and Rogers for a 14-5 lead. The Falcons answered with three in the bottom of the frame.

Josh Varner (6-1) grabbed the win in relief, toeing the rubber for the final 3 2/3 innings. The Brandon, Miss.-native allowed just three hits with three strikeouts. UWA starter J. B. Black pitched four innings, allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and four punch-outs. Dom Sapp tossed 1 1/3 innings in relief of Black and surrendered five runs on five hits with four walks.

West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, March 25, as UWA hosts Auburn Montgomery at 4:00 p.m. The game can be followed via live stats at athletics.uwa.edu.
