Tigers Travel to Montevallo for GSC Weekend Series

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team returns to the diamond on Saturday, March 21 for a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Montevallo. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on WZNJ 106.5-FM and at athletics.uwa.edu.

The opening game marks the 111th meeting in the series with the Tigers holding a 66-44 advantage. The two teams have split the last 10 outings in the series.

UWA (17-8, 2-0 GSC) enters the contest riding a six-game win streak, including an 8-4 win over Delta State on Wednesday evening at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss. Rob Dahlberg and Bryan Mason each posted multiple-RBI efforts in the win, driving in two runs a piece.

Dahlberg, a Gilbertown, Ala.-native, pilots UWA’s offense with a .438 batting average. The senior has recorded 21 RBI and 27 runs scored on 32 hits this season while leading the Tigers with 13 stolen bases. Nick Wheeler, a product of Hokes Bluff, Ala., is second on the team in batting average with a .417 clip while leading UWA with 30 RBI and 40 hits.

Mike Schmitt and Matt Hill pace the Tigers on the mound. Schmitt, a Cheyenne, Wyo.-senior, has posted a 3.40 ERA with a 5-1 record. The right hander has pitched a team-leading 39 2/3 innings with 26 strikeouts. Hill, a D’Iberville, Miss.-senior, has tallied a 4-2 record with a 4.21 ERA. The right-handed hurler leads the team with 33 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings on the bump.

UM enters the weekend with a 19-10-1 record and 1-2 in the GSC East Division. The Falcons dropped a 9-0 decision in their last outing, helping West Florida to an opening GSC series win. Ryan Norman and Kevin Garcia are batting over .400 for UM this season. Norman leads with a .473 batting average while Garcia is hitting at a .409 clip from the plate with 25 RBI and 36 hits, which ranks second on the team. John Michael Caraway enters the weekend with a spotless 4-0 record on the hill for the Falcons. Caraway has recorded a 3.29 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings on the mound.
