LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The
University of West Alabama baseball team completed a
three-game series sweep over the University of Arkansas
at Monticello, blanking the Boll Weevils 7-0 Sunday
afternoon at Tartt Field.
UWA (15-8), which has
won its last four outings, scored all seven of its runs
in the first three innings.
After holding UAM
(2-18) back in the first inning, the Tigers opened
the scoring with one
out as Clark Humber
singled to left field.
Following a Jake DeRoy
fly out to center field, Humber moved up to second on a
stolen base and later claimed third. Humber crossed the
dish on a Chris Gilbertsen single back up the middle.
Dallas Rogers followed with a bunt single, but moved all
the way around to third on a throwing error by Gus
Villegas, scoring Gilbertsen.
UWA added two runs in
the second inning. Todd Rea led the inning off with a
single through the right side and advanced to third on a
Brent Bumgarner double through the right side, placing
runners in scoring position with no outs. Darryl Brown
and Humber would both be recorded outs by Josh Mace, but
both Rea and Bumgarner scored on the Humber ground
out.
The Tigers would not
be done, adding three runs in the third inning. Dallas
Rogers hit a one-out
single to the shortstop and moved up to second on a
Clint Moody bunt single. James Guilliams doubled through
the left side to score Rogers and advance Moody to
third. A Rea double to right center would plate both
Moody and Gulliams for the final two UWA runs.
UWA starter Noel Baca
(3-3) received the win, pitching five innings,
scattering two hits and recording nine strikeouts. Brent
Telano saw two solid innings of work with four K’s and
two hits. R.J. Miller and Cole Thornton split the final
two innings with one apiece, each recording one
strikeout.
West Alabama returns
