LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The 10th-ranked
University of West
Alabama baseball
team swept a
mid-week
doubleheader from
the University of
Arkansas at
Monticello on
Tuesday afternoon at
Tartt Field. UWA
(31-10) took the
opening game 11-6
before completing
the twinbill sweep
with a 12-9 win.
Nick Wheeler and Rob
Dahlberg posted
multiple-RBI efforts
in the two
victories. Wheeler,
a Hokes Bluff,
Ala.-native,
finished the day
with three hits,
four RBI and a run
scored. Dahlberg, a
Gilbertown,
Ala.-product,
tallied three hits
on the afternoon
with five RBI and
three runs scored.
UWA struck in its
first at-bat in game
one of the double
dip, plating two
runs. UAM (7-32-1)
posted a run in the
top of the second,
cutting the lead in
half. The Tigers
answered with a
three spot in the
bottom of the
second. Dahlberg
plated the first two
runs of the frame
with a base hit that
scored Dallas Rogers
and Jeremy Dorrance.
The final run of the
frame came on a
Wheeler sacrifice
fly to right field
that plated Jeremy
Finney. After the
Boll Weevils pulled
within three runs,
8-5, heading into
the home half of the
fourth inning, the
Red and White added
its third
consecutive,
three-run inning.
Finney concluded the
inning with a double
to left field that
scored Dorrance and
Bryan Mason. UAM
added one run in the
top of the fifth,
before falling in
the contest.
John Ashley (2-0)
tossed 2 2/3 innings
in relief to grab
the win. Ashley
surrendered one run
on two hits with
four strikeouts and
one walk.
In the second game
of the day, UWA
trailed 3-1 after
the first two
innings of play.
Five runs in the
bottom of the third
inning, gave the
Tigers their first
lead of the game.
Following a Dahlberg
RBI, double to right
center, Wheeler
connected on his 10th
homerun of the
season to push the
Tigers in front 4-3.
UAM regained the
lead, 7-6, in the
top of the fourth
with a grand slam
off the bat of
Blaine Ivey, but UWA
retaliated with
three runs in the
bottom of the
inning. Mason capped
the scoring with a
single up the middle
that scored Brian
Simone and Douglas
Frazier. The Weevils
answered with two
runs in the top of
the fifth, knotting
the outing at 9-9. A
Dahlberg sac fly to
center broke the tie
in the fifth. A
Rogers’ single
scored Kyle
Standridge for the
first of two
insurance runs in
the sixth, as Mason
scored on a passed
ball to close out
the frame.
J. B. Black (2-0)
tossed 2/3 of an
inning in relief to
pick up the win,
with a pair of walks
and one strikeout.
Brian Burgess
claimed his eighth
save of the season,
throwing 1 2/3
innings with three
punch-outs and a
walk.
West Alabama returns
to Gulf South
Conference play on
Saturday, Apr. 18,
as UWA travels to
North Alabama for a
key East Division
series. First pitch
of the Saturday
doubleheader is
scheduled for 1:00
p.m. The games will
