Tigers Sweep UAH in GSC Opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team swept the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Sunday afternoon at Tartt Field. UWA (16-8, 2-0 GSC) turned back the Chargers (17-5, 0-2) in the opening game of the doubleheader 6-4 and claimed the night cap by a score of 8-4. The pair of wins extends UWA’s win streak to five.

A Nick Wheeler double in the Tigers' first at-bat in the opening game drove in the first two runs of the game, as Kevin Deese and Jeremy Finney crossed the dish. UWA plated an additional run in the third inning on a Brian Simone single to center field that scored Deese. UAH tallied its first run of the contest in the fourth inning, cutting the lead to 3-1. UWA answered with a run in the bottom of the frame as Jody Morgan scored on a Finney single to left field. Simone connected on a solo homerun in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 5-1. After UAH added two in the sixth to narrow the lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning, a Deese sacrifice fly to center field scored Rogers. UAH poked one run across the dish in the seventh, but couldn’t overcome the deficit.

Mike Schmitt (5-1) pitched 6 1/3 innings in the win, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. JB Black logged his first save of the season with an inning in relief. Dom Sapp pitched 1 2/3 innings in middle relief, allowing a run on two hits with a punch-out.

In game two, the Tigers amassed all eight runs in the first three frames of the contest. Deese homered down the right field line in the first inning to tally the first run of the game. After Simone crossed the plate for the first run of the second inning, Rogers doubled down the left field line to score Bryan Mason and Douglas Frazier for 4-0 lead. Deese cranked his second round tripper of the game to leadoff the third inning. The final two runs of the four spot in the inning came as Rogers doubled again down the left field line to score Mason and Sam McCormack.

UAH posted three runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth before falling to 0-2 in the conference.

Matt Hill (4-2) tossed five innings in the win, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Brian Burgess threw the final two innings in relief with two strikeouts.

West Alabama returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 18, as the Tigers face Delta State in Pearl, Miss. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Trustmark Park. The game will be broadcasted on WZNJ 106.5-FM.
