LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The
University of West Alabama baseball
team welcomes the 14th-ranked
University of Alabama in Huntsville
to Tartt Field this weekend for the
opening of Gulf South Conference
play. The series opens with a
doubleheader on Saturday, March 14,
beginning at 4:00 p.m. The game will
be broadcasted on WZNJ 106.5-FM and
at athletics.uwa.edu.
UAH (17-3) holds the all-time series
record at 24-17, but UWA (14-8) has
claimed the last six meetings,
sweeping both series in 2007 and
2008. Under UWA Head Coach Gary
Rundles, the Tigers are 15-12
against the Chargers.
Two Tigers enter the weekend batting
over .400 for the season. Rob
Dahlberg pilots UWA at the plate,
posting a .475 batting clip. The
Gilbertown, Ala. senior is second on
the team in RBI with 19 and in
doubles with five. Nick Wheeler, a
Hokes Bluff, Ala. senior, is batting
.410 on the year and leads the team
with 27 RBI and six homeruns. Mike
Schmitt leads the UWA hurlers with a
4-1 record and 3.24 ERA. The
Cheyenne, Wyo.-product has pitched a
team-best 33 1/3 innings while
holding opponent batters to a .242
average and recording 20 strikeouts.
UWA is currently riding a three-game
win streak, its second longest of
the season.
Ryan McCrory paces the UAH offense,
batting .397 on the season. McCrory
also leads the team with 28 RBI, 10
doubles and seven homeruns for the
year. Jacob Wray brings in a
spotless 4-0 record in a team-best
31 2/3 innings pitched. Wray has
posted a 3.13 ERA in five
appearances and is holding opponents
to a .231 batting average with a
team-leading 27 strikeouts. The
Chargers had their 14-game win
streak snapped in a 5-2 loss at
Stillman on March 8, but rallied to
win 12-6 in the final game of the
day and clinch the series.
This weekend’s series is scheduled
to conclude on Sunday, March 15 with
a single, nine inning contest at
Tartt Field. First pitch is
scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Sunday’s
