Tigers Host #14 UAH in GSC Opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team welcomes the 14th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville to Tartt Field this weekend for the opening of Gulf South Conference play. The series opens with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 14, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on WZNJ 106.5-FM and at athletics.uwa.edu.

UAH (17-3) holds the all-time series record at 24-17, but UWA (14-8) has claimed the last six meetings, sweeping both series in 2007 and 2008. Under UWA Head Coach Gary Rundles, the Tigers are 15-12 against the Chargers.

Two Tigers enter the weekend batting over .400 for the season. Rob Dahlberg pilots UWA at the plate, posting a .475 batting clip. The Gilbertown, Ala. senior is second on the team in RBI with 19 and in doubles with five. Nick Wheeler, a Hokes Bluff, Ala. senior, is batting .410 on the year and leads the team with 27 RBI and six homeruns. Mike Schmitt leads the UWA hurlers with a 4-1 record and 3.24 ERA. The Cheyenne, Wyo.-product has pitched a team-best 33 1/3 innings while holding opponent batters to a .242 average and recording 20 strikeouts. UWA is currently riding a three-game win streak, its second longest of the season.

Ryan McCrory paces the UAH offense, batting .397 on the season. McCrory also leads the team with 28 RBI, 10 doubles and seven homeruns for the year. Jacob Wray brings in a spotless 4-0 record in a team-best 31 2/3 innings pitched. Wray has posted a 3.13 ERA in five appearances and is holding opponents to a .231 batting average with a team-leading 27 strikeouts. The Chargers had their 14-game win streak snapped in a 5-2 loss at Stillman on March 8, but rallied to win 12-6 in the final game of the day and clinch the series.

This weekend’s series is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, March 15 with a single, nine inning contest at Tartt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Sunday’s broadcast can be heard on the internet by clicking the UWA Baseball logo on MyWin98.com.
