LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The 11th-ranked
University of West Alabama
baseball team continues its
six-game homestand, as UWA
(26-10) hosts Talladega College
in a three-game, weekend series.
The trio of games begins on
Friday, Apr. 10 with a
doubleheader scheduled at 4:00
p.m. The series concludes on
Saturday, Apr. 11 with a 1:00
p.m. scheduled first pitch. All
three games will be aired on
WZNJ 106.5-FM and at
athletics.uwa.edu.
The Tigers enter the weekend
series fresh off of a 12-9
come-from-behind win over
William Carey on Wednesday
evening. Dallas Rogers drove in
four of the Red and White’s 12
runs during the contest. Josh
Varner picked up the win, his
seventh of the season, while
Brian Burgess placed himself in
the top five all-time in career
saves at UWA with his seventh of
the season and 12th
of his career.
UWA topped West Florida last
weekend to earn its fourth Gulf
South Conference series win of
the season. In the series win,
the Tigers secured a spot in the
GSC Tournament in Millington,
Tenn., May 2-6.
Rob Dahlberg has posted a .441
batting average, the best on the
team, as the Gilbertown,
Ala.-native also leads the
Tigers in stolen bases with 22.
The senior first baseman has 32
RBI on the year and 52 hits,
which is second best on the
team. Nick Wheeler, a Hokes
Bluff, Ala.-product, paces the
Red and White with 55 hits and
45 RBI, team-leading. Mike
Schmitt and Matt Hill are the
catalyst on the bump for the
Tigers. Schmitt, a Cheyenne,
Wyo.-product, has pitched a
team-leading 59 1/3 innings
while compiling a 7-1 record
with a 2.88 ERA. Hill holds a
6-2 record on the mound with a
3.51 ERA. The D’Iberville,
Miss.-native has fanned a
team-leading 50 opposing batters
this season.
Following this weekend’s series,
West Alabama hosts the
University of Arkansas at
Monticello on Tuesday, Apr. 14
in a non-conference
doubleheader. First pitch of the
twinbill is scheduled to start
at 1:30 p.m.
