LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The 11th-ranked
University of West Alabama
baseball team extended its
win streak to five games
with a doubleheader sweep of
Talladega College on Friday
evening at Tartt Field. UWA
(28-10) claimed the opening
contest 13-5 and wrapped up
the twinbill with an 11-2
win.
The Tigers led 4-1 through
four innings in game one,
but TC (10-31) cut the lead
in half with a run in the
fifth inning. Rob Dahlberg
landed the first two runs of
the game on a two-run,
homerun to left field. The
Gilbertown, Ala.-native
finished the contest with
two hits, en route to
becoming the all-time hits
leader at UWA with 281.
UWA answered with a four
spot in the bottom of the
fifth inning. Douglas
Frazier doubled down the
left field line to score
Clint Brown for the first
run of the inning. Frazier
later scored on a wild pitch
for a 6-2 lead. One batter
later Dallas Rogers doubled
to left field to score Bryan
Mason. Jeremy Finney wrapped
up the scoring in the inning
with a sacrifice fly to left
that scored Jeremy Dorrance.
The Red and White added two
more in the sixth inning to
lengthen its 10-2 lead
heading into the top of the
eighth. The Tornadoes cut
the deficit in half with
three runs in the eighth
inning, but UWA responded
with three in the bottom of
the frame to close out the
game.
Mike Schmitt (8-1) pitched
seven innings in the win,
with two runs on six hits
and five strikeouts. Trevor
Zugmaier tossed two innings
in relief, allowing three
runs on three hits with four
KO’s.
In game two, UWA opened with
four runs in its first
at-bat, but saw TC shorten
the lead to 4-2 in the
second inning. The Tigers
tallied five runs in the
third inning. After Finney
and Dorrance drove in the
first two runs of the frame,
Mason doubled up the middle
to plate Finney and Rogers.
The scoring was capped off
when Brian Simone singled to
left field to score Mason. A
Rogers two-run,
round-tripper in the fourth
inning closed out the
scoring in the contest.
Matt Hill (7-2) hurled toed
the rubber for five innings
in the win, allowing just
runs on four hits with five
punch-outs. Carrick Tuck and
Zane Adams each threw an
inning in relief, with a
combined two hits and four
strikeouts.
West
Alabama closes out the
series with Talladega
College on Saturday, Apr.
11. First pitch is scheduled
