Tigers Rally at Stillman Falls Short

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A nine run fourth inning by Stillman proved to be too much, as the University of West Alabama baseball team’s rally fell short in a 10-9 loss at Stillman’s Tiger Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The loss, which snapped a two-game win streak, also brought to a halt a 22-game winning streak for UWA (8-7) over SC, which improved to 6-7 on the season. UWA, which out hit Stillman 15-10, squandered 14 runners on base.

After pulling within one run of tying the game in the seventh inning on a Rob Dahlberg single to right field that scored Jeremy Finney, the Tigers with one away had a runner in scoring position, but managed no runs in the top of the ninth to end the game.

UWA posted seven total runs in its first two at bats of the game with four in the opening inning. SC tallied its first run of the contest in the bottom of the second, but after three complete innings found itself down 7-1. The Blue and Gold Tigers held UWA off the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, before erupting for their big inning of the contest. Josh McGinnis capped the inning for Stillman with a three-run homerun to left center, putting SC up 10-7.

The Tigers added a run in the sixth inning, to pull within 10-8, as Dahlberg scored on a Nick Wheeler double to center field. Dalhberg finished the game 4-for-5 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Wheeler went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.

The UWA pitching staff sent five hurlers to the mound in the contest. Trevor Zugmaier (0-1) gave up three runs while recording no outs in his first loss of the season.

Colter Millican drew the start and tossed three innings, his longest outing of the season, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout and walk. Zane Adams (0-1) threw a 1/3 of an inning, surrendering five runs on four hits. JB Black pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one run on four hits with two punch outs. Brian Burgess also pitched 1/3 of an inning.

West Alabama returns to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 28, as UWA travels to Cleveland, Miss. for a three-game series against Delta State. First pitch of the Saturday double dip is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Statemen’s Dave “Boo” Ferriss Field.
