UWA Baseball inks five signees

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –University of West Alabama baseball coach Gary Rundles has announced the signing of five student-athletes for the 2008 season. Three athletes from the community college ranks and two high school seniors make up the signing class.

Josh Turner makes his way from Alberta, Canada to Livingston by way of Colby Community College in Kansas. Turner recorded a 5-2 record on the hill with one complete game in 43 1/3 innings pitched. The hurler from Spruce Grove struck out 45 opposing batters this season, allowing 19 walks while totaling a 2.58 ERA.

Jeremy Finney joins UWA from Itawamba (Miss.) Community College where he made 50 starts for the Indians. The Memphis, Tenn. native was selected All-State while leading ICC with 57 runs scored and 20 doubles on the year, while posting a .369 batting average. As the leadoff batter, Finney registered a .571 slugging percentage with a .459 on-base percentage.

Sam McCormack rounds out the JUCO signees, coming to the Tigers via Dyersburg State (Tenn.) Community College. The Bartlett, Tenn. native boasted a .392 batting average, as a catcher, while driving in 51 runs with 13 doubles and 10 homeruns on the year. McCormack helped lead the 43-13 record and a berth in the TJCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Baseball Tournament.

Joining the three JUCO signees are Andrew Parten of Thomasville (Ala.) High School and Josh Varner of Brandon (Miss.) High School.

Parten tallied a 4-1 record on the mound with one save in his senior season for the Tigers. The THS hurler threw 37-plus innings, recording 49 strikeouts against 23 walks, while allowing 35 hits for 3.34 ERA. Parten was selected to the 2007 East-West All-Star Team and was also named Salutatorian with a 4.28 GPA.

Varner compiled a 5-1 record on the hill, boasting a 1.44 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 34 innings of work. The Bulldog pitcher helped BHS to its first district title in 10 years, earning a berth in the MHSAA State Playoffs.

West Alabama (41-16) finished the season Gulf South Conference East Division champions and the GSC Tournament Runner-up.
