LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The
23rd-ranked University of West
Alabama baseball team split a pair
of games on Saturday at Tartt Field.
UWA (7-5) lost the opening contest
of the day 7-3 to No. 3 Ouachita
Baptist and held off No. 28 St.
Joseph’s for the 6-5 win.
After UWA plated the
first run of the game in second
inning and held the lead through six
innings, SJC (4-1) posted a four
spot in the top of the seventh
inning to take a 4-1 advantage. The
Tigers answered with a run outburst
of their own in the bottom of the
inning, plating five to regain the
lead.
With two out and two
on base, Jeremy Finney delivered a
double to center field to score
Dallas Rogers and Kyle Moore. Rob
Dahlberg followed, delivering a
single through the right side to
score Finney, tying the game at 4-4.
The final blow of the inning came on
a two-run homerun by Nick Wheeler
over the left field fence, which
scored Dahlberg.
The Pumas pulled
within one in the eighth, but
managed no further runs the rest of
the way.
Kasey Nafzger (1-2)
picked up his first win of the
season, throwing 7 1/3 innings. The
right-hander struck out 12 batters
in the effort, allowing four runs on
three hits. Brian Burgess (3) threw
the final 1 2/3 inning for his third
save of the season.
In the opening
contest of the day, UWA out-hit OBU
10-6, but managed only three runs in
the loss.
The Tigers struck
first in the contest, plating two
runs in their first at-bat. With two
down in the inning, Dahlberg and
Wheeler each singled, setting up
Kevin Deese’s double down the right
field line to score the pair of
runs. UWA held the 2-0 margin until
the top of the fourth, when the
Purple and Gold clad Tigers tied the
contest.
OBU would then erupt
for five runs in the seventh inning
to take the 7-2 lead. UWA managed
one more run in the home half of the
inning on a solo homerun by Brian
Simone.
Matt Hill (2-2) had
his season record evened in the
loss, throwing 6 1/3 innings,
allowing five runs on four hits.
Colter Millican and JB Black
combined for the final 2 2/3 innings
on the bump.
West Alabama closes
out the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 22,
as UWA hosts St. Joseph’s in the
final affair of the day. First pitch
is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
