LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The 16th-ranked
University of West Alabama baseball team split with a
Sunday doubleheader with Mars Hill College, as the
Tigers claimed game one, 16-0, to clinch the series, but
fell 11-1 in the second contest of the day at Tartt
Field.
Mars Hill (19-30) struck first in game two, when Clarke
Rollins homered to center field in the third inning. UWA
(30-13) answered back in the bottom of the inning when
James Guilliams hit his second dinger of the day to tie
the game.
The Lions posted two runs in the fourth inning to regain
the lead. Devin Presnell singled to left field to score
Danny Miller, who doubled to center, to break the tie.
James Dean followed with a single to right center to
score Dustin Kerley for the final run of the inning.
MHC added three insurance runs in the sixth and five
more in the seventh to escape the series sweep.
Justin Hall (4-3) pitched all seven innings to get the
win, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts.
Stephen Barnett (3-4) received the loss with four
innings of work, allowing three runs on eight hits,
recording six K’s.
UWA posted all the runs it needed in the first inning of
game one, plating four, but the Tigers would not stop
there, erupting for 10 runs in the fourth inning. Rob
Dahlberg hit two of his three homers on the day in the
inning, as Gulliams tacked on the other.
The Red and White plated two more in the eighth to cap
off the double-digit, shutout win.
Brandon Wheeler (7-2) pitched five innings, allowing two
hits while fanning six MHC batters. Cole Thornton and
Matt Chambless each threw one inning surrendering no
hits.
Nick Tracy took the loss with 3 2/3 innings of work,
allowing 12 runs on 14 hits, while Joseph Keel threw 2
1/3 innings surrendering four runs on four hits.
West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, April 18,
as the Tigers travel to Loyola-New Orleans for a
doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. |
