West Alabama falls to West Florida

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama baseball team made it to Championship Day, but couldn’t get over the hump as the Tigers fell to West Florida, 6-1, in the Gulf South Conference Championships Wednesday at USA Baseball Stadium.

R.J. Miller (2-1) started on the mound for West Alabama, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. Cole Thornton worked a 1/3 of an inning in relief. Matt Chambless pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up a run on three hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Brent Telano also worked in relief.

West Florida (41-17) broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning.

Jason Kohl opened with a walk and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt by Miller. After a strikeout to Bo Williams, Clay Wallace singled up the middle, advancing Kohl to third. Jacob Whisenhunt scored Kohl from third on a base hit up the middle, giving the Argonauts a 1-0 lead.

West Florida grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Peter Antoske as he drilled a 2-2 pitch by Miller over the left field wall.

Meanwhile, West Alabama (41-16) couldn’t get much going offensively against Argonauts starting pitcher Brett McCullough.

West Florida added to the lead in the sixth inning by three runs on three hits.

Williams led off the frame with a single through the left side and moved to second on a fielding error by Miller as Wallace took first on the error. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch and scored on a base hit to right-center by Whisenhunt.

After a pitching change, Lee Huggins walked to put runners at first and second. Kyle Andrews reached on a fielder’s choice as Huggins was out at third on a force play. Justin Wood reached on a bloop single to center, scoring Whisenhunt.

West Alabama threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning by putting two runners on base by McCullough got James Guilliams looking to end the frame.

The Tigers again tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning by scoring a run on three hits.

Clark Humber hit a one-out single through the right side and Rob Dahlberg followed with a base hit through the left side. After a pitching change, Todd Rea ripped a 2-2 pitch by Argonauts reliever Jon Sintes into center, scoring Humber from second. Jake DeRoy bounced into an inning-ending double play.

Williams gave the Argonauts a 6-1 lead in the top of the ninth with a solo home run over the left-center wall.

McCullough (11-1) pitched 7 1/3 innings, giving up a run, while scattering six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Sintes worked 2/3 of an innings, while Phil Lawhorn pitched the ninth.

NOTES: In the latest NCAA South Central Regional Poll, West Alabama remained seventh… Other Gulf South Conference schools in the region poll were Ouachita Baptist in first, followed by Delta State (second), Montevallo (fourth) and Southern Arkansas (sixth)… Angelo State defeated Abilene Christian to win the Lonestar Conference crown… St. Edward’s also received an automatic bid by winning the Heartland Conference.
