PEARL, Miss. – The University of
West Alabama baseball team kept its
three-game win streak intact at
Trustmark Park, defeating Delta
State 8-4 on Wednesday evening. UWA
(17-8) extended its win streak to
six games, snapping the 10-game win
streak of the Statesmen (16-10) in
the process.
The Tigers trailed after DSU’s first
at-bat, but answered with three runs
in the bottom of the first and never
fell behind the Statesmen again.
Josh Varner (5-1) picked up the win,
throwing 3 2/3 innings in the
outing. The Brandon, Miss.-native
entered the game with bases loaded
in the fourth and erased the next
three DSU batters, including two of
his three strikeouts to close the
side. J. B. Black picked up the
save, his second of the season.
Leading 5-4, UWA plated three runs
on the board in the sixth inning to
take a commanding 8-4 lead. The
Tigers received back-to-back singles
from Nick Wheeler and Brian Simone,
but the Statesmen erased the next
two UWA batters. Bryan Mason doubled
down the left field line to score
Wheeler and Simone. Dallas Rogers
followed suit with a double down the
same line to score Mason.
DSU tied the game at 3-3 in the top
of the second inning, but UWA
answered with a run in the bottom of
the frame, as Rob Dahlberg singled
up the middle to score Rogers. The
Tigers added another run on the
board in the home half of the third
with Douglas Frazier scoring on a
bases loaded walk.
West Alabama returns to the diamond
on Saturday, March 21, as the Tigers
travel to Montevallo, Ala. to face
the Falcons. First pitch of the
doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00
p.m. The game will be broadcasted on
WZNJ 106.5-FM and at
