BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 12th-ranked
University of West Alabama baseball team
placed 12 student-athletes on the 2008
All-Gulf South Conference teams, including
GSC East Division Player of the Year Rob
Dahlberg. The 12 is the most in school and
conference history by one team in a single
season.
Dahlberg,
the 2006 GSC East Division Freshman of the
Year, also claimed his third consecutive
All-GSC laurel and was named to the First
Team for the second year in a row. The
junior from Gilbertown, Ala. led UWA in
eight offensive categories and ranked in the
top ten of the GSC in six of those groups
including having the highest on-base
percentage in the league. Dahlberg also
ranked in the top 12 in five NCAA offensive
categories.
Joining
Dahlberg on the First Team is senior pitcher
and unanimous selection Brandon Dill
(Columbus, Miss.), senior catcher Jake DeRoy
(Birmingham, Ala.), junior second baseman
Jeremy Finney (Memphis, Tenn.), junior
shortstop Nick Wheeler (Hokes Bluff, Ala.),
senior outfielder Tres Avans (Trenton, Ga.)
and junior pitcher Mike Schmitt (Cheyenne,
Wyo.).
Representing UWA on the Second Team is
senior designated hitter Todd Rea
(Middleburg, Fla.), senior outfielder Matt
Busbee (Faunsdale, Ala.), junior pitcher
Matt Hill (D’Iberville, Miss.) and freshmen
pitchers Josh Varner (Brandon, Miss.) and
Brian Burgess (Huntsville, Ala.).
Nine
players are making their first appearance on
the All-GSC Teams with three returning. In
the 12 selections are seven GSC Pitcher and
Player of the Week laurels.
West Alabama returns to
action on Saturday, May 3, as the Tigers
make their fifth consecutive trip to the GSC
Baseball Tournament in Millington, Tenn.
UWA, the #2 seed from the East, will face
Ouachita Baptist, the West’s #3 seed, at
approximately 7:30 p.m. at USA Stadium. All
