LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The
University of West Alabama baseball
team held off Columbia Union for a
15-9 victory on Monday evening at
Tartt Field. UWA improves to 13-8 on
the season while the Pioneers fall
to 3-4.
The
Tigers posted runs on the scoreboard
in four of the first five innings,
including two, leadoff solo homeruns
by Kevin Deese in second and fourth
innings. The Fosters, Ala.-native is
tied with Nick Wheeler for the team
lead in round trippers with five.
Dallas Rogers tallied a 2-for-2
night at the dish with a team-best 3
RBI. The McCalla, Ala.-product
picked up his last two RBI with a
base hit to center field that scored
Douglas Frazier and Wheeler for a
10-0 lead through four complete
innings.
UWA added
another run in the fifth as Jeremy
Dorrance scored on a ground out by
Stephen Dennis, giving UWA an 11-0
margin that held through six
innings.
The CUC
posted a seven spot on the board in
the seventh inning, capped by
Richard Arciniega single to right
field that scored Anthony Weber. The
Pioneers totaled all seven runs on
five hits.
UWA
placed four runs on the board in the
eighth. Brent Bonner scored the
first run of the inning, followed by
a Marc Mahler singled up the middle
that scored Jeremy Dorrance. One
batter later, Dennis logged his
second RBI of the game on a base hit
to center field that scored Mahler
before scoring the final UWA run of
the contest on an error by the third
baseman.
The
Pioneers plated two runs in the
ninth to conclude the scoring.
Trevor
Zugmaier (1-1) picked up his first
win of the season with six complete
innings on the mound. The Barnhart,
Mo.-native recorded a career-high
seven strikeouts in his longest
outing of the year, allowing no runs
on two hits.
West
Alabama returns to the diamond on
Wednesday, March 11, as UWA travels
to Hattiesburg, Miss. for a single
game contest against William Carey.
First pitch is scheduled for 4:00
p.m.
